The box is of compressed circular form, with a fitted inner-and-outer rim and a shallow ring foot. It is decorated throughout in underglaze blue and wucai enamels. The top of the cover is painted with a pair of red and blue dragons contesting a flaming pearl, the dragons rendered with vigorous, animated movement and surrounded by flame and auspicious-cloud motifs. Around the exterior of the body are striding dragons in yellow, green, red and blue, interspersed with flame motifs. The overall design is dense and sumptuous, with rich, vivid colours.
The rims of the mouth and cover are decorated with wucai scrolling foliage, creating a layered ornamental effect. The base is inscribed in underglaze blue, within double circles, with the six-character mark in regular script: “Da Ming Jiajing nian zhi” — “Made in the Jiajing reign of the Great Ming dynasty.” The neat, upright calligraphy is typical of Jiajing imperial kiln marks.
