器作四方形，直壁，盖与盒身以子母口相合，盒底四角有直角形足。内外施釉，外壁以粉彩装饰，盖面以桂花锦纹为地，于中心处作方形开光，内绘山石花蝶纹。器底有青花书“大清乾隆年制”六字篆书款。该器画工精细，色彩丰富，浓淡相宜，纹样生动，当为把玩文房器之精品。
The box is of square form, with straight sides. The cover and body fit together with an inner-and-outer rim, and the four corners of the base are supported on right-angled feet. The vessel is glazed inside and out, and the exterior is decorated in famille rose enamels. The cover is painted with an osmanthus-pattern diaper ground, centred by a square cartouche enclosing a design of rocks, flowers and butterflies.
The base is inscribed in underglaze blue with the six-character seal-script mark: “Da Qing Qianlong nian zhi” — “Made in the Qianlong reign of the Great Qing dynasty.” Finely painted and richly coloured, with well-balanced tonal variations and lively decoration, this piece may be regarded as an exceptional scholar’s desk object intended for handling and appreciation.
