The dish is potted with a flared mouth, an angled waist and a ring foot. It is decorated throughout in the doucai technique. The centre is painted with a “green dragon teaching its young” design. The larger dragon is predominantly rendered in green enamel, with details picked out in blue, yellow and iron red, its posture majestic and vigorous. The young dragon is partly concealed among the waves, echoing the dynamic movement of the elder dragon as it expels water. The motif conveys the political symbolism of imperial succession and the transmission of authority from father to son.

The exterior is decorated with borders combining key-fret and ruyi-cloud-head motifs, the palette mainly composed of blue, yellow and green. These bands strengthen the outline of the form while creating a layered visual response to the central design. The body is firm, fine and evenly thinly potted, and the glaze is smooth, lustrous and luminous, displaying the “white as congealed fat, smooth as fine jade” quality associated with Yongzheng imperial porcelain. The base is inscribed in underglaze blue, within double circles, with the six-character mark in two vertical lines in regular script: “Da Qing Yongzheng nian zhi” — “Made in the Yongzheng reign of the Great Qing dynasty.”

The “green dragon teaching its young” motif is a classic subject in Qing court porcelain, particularly popular during the Yongzheng and Qianlong periods. It not only reflects the imperial concern with dynastic continuity, but also embodies the Confucian ethical ideal of a benevolent father and filial son.
