The vessel has a straight mouth, cylindrical body, slightly constricted waist and flat base, and is of substantial size. It is covered inside and out with a transparent glaze, the surface clear and bright, and is decorated throughout in underglaze blue. Around the body is a continuous narrative scene depicting “Xiao He Pursuing Han Xin by Moonlight”. The composition unfolds in a direct yet compelling manner.

Xiao He is shown on horseback, turning to look ahead, attended by a group of followers. Soldiers rush forward in pursuit, while Han Xin urges on his horse with a raised whip, the animal’s hooves lifted in mid-gallop. The tension of the moment is vividly conveyed. The figures are animated and expressive; surrounding them are layered mountains, dense trees and luxuriant vegetation. The composition is carefully arranged, the brushwork natural and fluid, and the painting precise yet vigorous. The cobalt blue is bright and brilliant in tone.

The story of “Xiao He Pursuing Han Xin by Moonlight” derives from the Records of the Grand Historian, in the “Hereditary House of the Marquis of Huaiyin”. It is a celebrated tale about recognising and retaining talent: Han Xin, having joined Liu Bang but finding himself unappreciated, left in disappointment. Xiao He pursued him through the night and strongly recommended him, ultimately helping to bring about great achievement. In later usage, the story came to symbolise the importance of valuing and keeping talented people.
