Lot 41: Blue and White Bowl with the “Three Friends of Winter” Motif 青花岁寒三友纹碗

敞口，弧壁，圈足。胎体细腻，釉面洁白。口沿及外壁近足处均绘两道青花弦纹，外壁以青花满绘松竹梅纹一周，纹饰清晰，发色浓艳，有铁锈斑。足内施釉，无款。圈足处略见火石红斑点。

该器呈斗笠形，形制规整。所绘松竹梅三友图是传统的装饰图案，松、竹、梅分别象征常青不老、君子之道和冰肌玉骨，这三种植物不畏严冬，故名“岁寒三友”，是瓷器装饰的典型纹样之一。青花青翠艳丽，绘画工艺精湛。此品种十分少见，保存完整如初，极为难得。

The bowl is potted with a flared mouth, rounded sides and a ring foot. The body is finely levigated and covered with a pure white glaze. The rim and the lower exterior above the foot are each encircled by two underglaze-blue line borders. The exterior is freely painted in underglaze blue with a continuous design of pine, bamboo and prunus. The decoration is clearly rendered, the cobalt of a rich and vivid tone with characteristic iron-rust spots. The interior of the foot is glazed and bears no mark. Slight russet “flint-red” speckling is visible around the foot ring.

The vessel is of conical, “doucai-hat” form and is well proportioned. The design of the Three Friends of Winter—pine, bamboo and prunus—is a traditional decorative theme: pine symbolises evergreen longevity, bamboo the virtues of the gentleman, and prunus purity and resilience. As these three plants withstand the cold of winter, they are known collectively as the “Three Friends of Winter” and became one of the classic motifs in ceramic decoration. The underglaze blue is bright and vibrant, and the painting is finely executed. Examples of this type are exceptionally rare; preserved in complete and original condition, this piece is especially remarkable.
