The washer is potted with a foliated rim, shallow rounded sides and a ring foot. The body follows the contour of the rim in a melon-lobed form, its lines smooth and elegant, combining visual refinement with the practical requirements of a scholar’s desk object. The body is fine and white, covered with a lustrous, thick glaze. At the exposed areas of the foot, the biscuit reveals a delicate “glutinous-rice” texture, fully demonstrating the superb craftsmanship of the Xuande imperial kilns.
The centre of the washer is painted in underglaze blue with a “dragon and phoenix bringing auspiciousness” design. The five-clawed dragon is vigorous and powerful, with finely rendered scales and a flowing mane, while the phoenix spreads its wings and turns its head, its long tail feathers gracefully extended. The two creatures respond to one another amid swirling auspicious clouds. The composition is full and balanced, with a commanding sense of grandeur.
The exterior is painted with roundel dragon motifs, and the base is also decorated with a dragon-and-phoenix design, echoing the central motif. The inner and outer rims are bordered with double underglaze-blue line bands, simple and orderly in execution, further setting off the splendour of the central decoration.
