The bowl is potted with a flared mouth, rounded sides and a high ring foot. The exterior is painted in underglaze blue with a scene of ladies in a garden setting, the lines fluid and assured, and the figures graceful and pleasing in form. Around the foot is a band of scrolling foliage. The base is inscribed in underglaze blue, within double circles, with the six-character mark in two vertical lines in regular script: “Da Ming Xuande nian zhi” — “Made in the Xuande reign of the Great Ming dynasty.”
The decoration is spaciously arranged, creating an open composition and a quiet, refined atmosphere. Figure subjects are relatively rare on Xuande porcelain, and surviving examples often convey a strong literati sensibility. The present bowl depicts ladies appreciating a painting, expressing a tranquil and elegant mood, and is a typical example of imperial porcelain made for court use.
