Lot 65: Doucai Covered Jar with Chrysanthemum Medallion Design 斗彩团菊纹盖罐

直口，短颈，鼓腹，圈足，配有平顶盖。通体施釉，外壁以斗彩装饰。颈下、足上一周以青花分两色渲染变形如意云头，云头中心点红、黄彩。腹部绘团菊纹，呈品字形分布，图菊以红黄二色装饰，又以绿彩蕉叶为衬托，其间饰折枝莲纹。盖面两朵团菊均为红色，盖沿一周绘莲纹，与腹身图菊间莲纹相近。罐外底心以青花书“大清乾隆年制”六字三行篆书款。该器应是对成化御窑同类器的摹仿，而在清代宫廷绘画中，可见其与茶壶共置于矮几之上，应是将之作为茶叶罐。

The jar is potted with a straight mouth, a short neck, a globular body and a ring foot, and is fitted with a flat-topped cover. It is glazed overall and decorated on the exterior in the doucai technique. Around the area below the neck and above the foot, stylised ruyi-cloud heads are rendered in underglaze blue with two tones of shading, the centres of the cloud heads picked out in red and yellow enamels.

The body is painted with chrysanthemum roundels arranged in a triangular formation. The chrysanthemum motifs are decorated in red and yellow enamels and set off by green plantain leaves, with sprays of lotus interspersed between them. The cover is painted with two red chrysanthemum roundels, while the rim of the cover is encircled by a lotus scroll similar to the lotus motifs between the chrysanthemum roundels on the body.

The centre of the exterior base is inscribed in underglaze blue with the six-character seal-script mark in three vertical lines: “Da Qing Qianlong nian zhi” — “Made in the Qianlong reign of the Great Qing dynasty.” The vessel appears to imitate comparable wares from the Chenghua imperial kilns. In Qing court paintings, similar jars are shown placed together with teapots on low tables, suggesting that they were used as tea caddies.
