The bowl is potted with a flared mouth, deep rounded sides and a ring foot. The body is slightly thick, giving the form a solid and substantial appearance. The exterior is covered with a ruby-red glaze, while the interior and base are covered with a white glaze. The centre of the base is inscribed in underglaze blue, within double circles, with the six-character mark in two vertical lines in regular script: “Da Qing Yongzheng nian zhi” — “Made in the Yongzheng reign of the Great Qing dynasty.”
Ruby-red glaze, also known as “rose red” or “Western gold red”, is a low-fired glaze developed under the influence of Western enamel techniques. First created during the Kangxi period of the Qing dynasty, it uses gold as the colouring agent, producing its distinctive pinkish-red tone.
