The vessel is potted with a straight mouth, cylindrical sides, a slightly constricted waist and a jade-disc-shaped base. It is covered inside and out with a transparent glaze, the surface clear, bright and smooth. The entire vessel is decorated in underglaze blue. The exterior is densely covered with the character shou (“longevity”), written in a variety of scripts, including seal, clerical and running scripts. Numbering as many as one hundred, these characters convey the auspicious meaning of “one hundred forms of longevity”, a popular theme in Qing court decoration.
The base is left unglazed with a sandy surface, the body of firm, dense and substantial texture. The centre of the base is inscribed in underglaze blue with the six-character mark in three vertical lines in regular script: “Da Qing Kangxi nian zhi” — “Made in the Kangxi reign of the Great Qing dynasty.” This is a typical foot and base treatment seen on Kangxi imperial porcelain.
