The bowl has an everted rim, deep rounded sides and a shallow ring foot. Its form resembles an inverted horseshoe, from which it takes its name. The body is thin and light, and the glaze is soft and lustrous. The decoration is executed in the doucai technique. The main design on the exterior consists of four floral roundels painted in blue, red, green and yellow enamels, interspersed with sprays of pomegranate. Around the lower section is a band of stylised chrysanthemum petals in alternating yellow and green.
The decoration is well arranged, and the enamelling is finely applied. The underglaze blue and the overglaze enamels respond to one another harmoniously, creating a lively interplay of colour. The centre of the base is inscribed in underglaze blue with the six-character mark in two vertical lines in regular script: “Da Qing Yongzheng nian zhi” — “Made in the Yongzheng reign of the Great Qing dynasty.”
Yongzheng-period doucai porcelain inherited the doucai tradition of the Chenghua reign of the Ming dynasty, while also introducing new developments. Its forms and decorative schemes are more varied than those of Chenghua wares, and the colours are brighter and more vibrant. Chenghua doucai pieces are mostly small wares, such as cups, bowls, jars and dishes. In the Yongzheng period, in addition to small wares, larger forms such as vases and zun-shaped vessels were also produced; Yongzheng doucai yuhuchun vases are particularly rare.
