The brush pot is of square form, with straight sides and a slightly recessed square base. It is decorated in underglaze blue. The outer rim and the area above the foot are painted with bands of scrolling foliage, while the four sides are decorated with figure-story scenes and pine-and-rock motifs. The cobalt blue is of a rich, deep tone; the figures are well proportioned, and their expressions and demeanour are rendered with remarkable vividness.
The underglaze-blue decoration employs the fenshui technique, drawing on the ink-wash effects of traditional Chinese painting, often described as “ink divided into five tones”. This is one of the defining characteristics of Kangxi-period blue-and-white porcelain. Square brush pots of this type are rare among surviving examples and have long been valued according to the saying, “one square piece equals three round ones”. The present brush pot represents the highest level of porcelain production of the Kangxi period.
